Sleeping under the stars, getting away from the city, and breathing fresh, clean air are just a few of the things that beckon RVers to take to the road. Unfortunately, the air in your RV can be unhealthy and full of pollutants if the proper precautions are not taken. Follow these six steps to help ensure you and your family are breathing healthy, clean air while on the road.
1. Make air quality a priority in your pre-trip check. Before heading out on the open road, you always need to make sure your RV and its systems are in working order. During this pre-trip check, make sure you keep an eye out for leaking water lines, roof and wall damage, and any evidence of water damage. If the air is stale from your RV being in storage over the window, open the windows and bring in a small electric fan to get the air moving and air out the interior.
2. Save the smoking for pit stops. This might be difficult for chain smokers, but if air quality is a concern, smoking should take place outside of the RV. You can plan for extra pit stops to accommodate the smokers in your group, or look into electronic cigarettes for use during driving days.
3.Avoid mold growth in your RV. We have talked before about the importance of avoiding mold growth, but it is worth mentioning again in any discussion of air quality. The most common time for mold growth is while your RV is not in use during the winter, so winterizing your RV is a crucial part of keeping your air quality healthy.
4.Consider adding a ventilator or air purifier. Air quality is important for everyone’s health, but it is particularly important for those with asthma, allergies or other ailments. If you are concerned about the air quality in your RV, you may want to
consider investing in a ventilator to improve air circulation or an air purifier to keep the air cleaner while on the road.
5.Clean without chemicals. Keeping dust and dirt under control is an important part of keeping the air healthy, but if you are cleaning with chemicals, you may be inadvertently polluting the air in your RV. Use natural
cleaning products to avoid introducing unnecessary chemicals to surfaces and the air.
6.Decorate with plants. Adding a few plants to your RV will create a more relaxing, home-like environment while also helping to clean the air.
